Audi continues to build its sporting diesel credentials and capitalize on its diesel-powered race program with three production car debuts and a pair of concept cars (See: Audi Powers Diesel Drive).
The A4 Avant made its world premiere in Geneva and will enter the European market with three TDI diesel engines and two gasoline engines, joining the redesigned Audi A4 sedan in spring of 2008.
The German automaker also unveiled the most powerful turbodiesel vehicle in the midsize SUV range in the shape of the Q7 V12 TDI quattro and the first production sports car to be powered by a diesel engine with the TT 2.0 TDI quattro.
Available in both coupe and roadster versions, the TT 2.0 TDI quattro is powered by a 2.0-liter TDI turbodiesel engine that produces 125 kW (170 horsepower) and 350 Nm (258 lb-ft) of torque that delivers the power associated with a sports car but fuel efficiency closer to a small compact car. Fuel economy is rated at 5.3 liters per 100 km (approx. 44 mpg) for the coupe and 5.5 liters per 100 km (approx. 42 mpg) for the roadster.
Audi is also taking TDI technology to another level with the Q7 V12 TDI quattro, the most powerful diesel-powered vehicle in its class with a 6.0-liter V12 turbodiesel engine that produces 368 kW (500 horsepower) and an astounding 1,000 Nm (approx. 758 lb-ft of torque). As the flagship of the Q7 line, the Q7 V12 TDI features a sport chassis, body modifications and luxurious interior appointments yet delivers fuel efficiency of 11.9 liters per 100 km (approx. 19.77 mpg).
Developed by Audi's performance division, quattro GmbH, the Q7 V12 TDI is a high-performance vehicle that features such standard equipment as carbon-ceramic brakes, 20-inch wheels and LED daytime running lights, Verano leather sport seats and a full compliment of high-tech and luxury features. The Q7 V12 TDI goes on sale in the second half of 2008.
The Audi A4 Avant continues to be a stylish midsize sport wagon alternative to a sport-utility vehicle for those who need to haul both gear and people. The A4 Avant is based on the same platform as the new sedan, including the new five-link front suspension.
The greatest change from the previous A4 Avant, apart from the styling, is the sloping roofline which gives the new wagon a long, elegant and flowing profile. Compared to the previous models, fuel consumption is reduced by an average of 14 percent. Storage space remains at 490 liters (17.3 cubic ft.) that expands to 1,430 liters (50.50 cubic ft.) with the rear seats folded down.
