Powered by state-of-the-art diesel engines with the latest emission technology to meet stringent emission standards in all 50 states, the ML320 BlueTEC, GL320 BlueTEC and R320 BlueTEC debuted from Mercedes-Benz at the New York Auto Show.
Diesel engines are well suited to SUV applications with abundant low-end torque that delivers power equivalent to a V8 engine with fuel economy comparable to a V6 engine. The BlueTEC Mercedes-Benz engine get 20 to 40 percent better fuel economy with extremely low exhaust emissions and in the SUVs have a cruising range of up to 600 miles at highway speeds.
The key to meeting the tough new emission standards for all 50 states is the modular BlueTEC technology that includes an oxidation catalytic converter, a maintenance-free particulate filter and new techniques for reducing nitrogen oxide emissions. The BlueTEC diesels use a new AdBlue exhaust treatment system that meets the most stringent 50-state emissions limits.
In addition to the new BlueTEC engine, the M-Class is also restyled for 2009 with new front bumpers, new headlights with a distinctive design along the lower edge that follows the lower edge of the grille. The grille is larger and lower with three silver ribs and there are new angular air intakes, widely set fog lights and chrome trim. The rear bumper is also new with recessed reflectors and a stainless steel skid plate wraps around the dual exhaust outlets.
Inside, new seats have a sportier design with a four-stage power lumbar support for the driver, the door panels have an upholstered center section and the new four-spoke steering wheel features multi-function buttons and shift paddles. A 6-disc DVD changer, hands-free Bluetooth phone system, a high-performance telematics system and a connection for audio devices highlight the new high-tech features.
The standard audio system includes a color display and speed-adjustable volume. Options include a voice recognition system, 610-watt digital Harmon Kardon Logic7 audio system and a rear-seat entertainment system with two eight-inch screens, wireless headphones and an integrated DVD player.
New SL
Also making its North American debut was the Mercedes-Benz SL roadster with fresh styling, more refinement and additional advanced technology. Most noticeable is the front-end design which is both new and familiar with a wider grille that incorporates a single horizontal element reminiscent of the legendary 300 SL, longitudinal bulges added to the hood and new headlights with standard bi-xenon lighting elements.
