Los Angeles -- the hub of automotive design trends, green technology and the custom car culture -- also happens to be the largest new car market in the nation. With its December time frame this year, the Los Angeles Auto Show has placed itself squarely first on the calendar of "big debut" auto shows -- followed by shows in Detroit in January, Chicago in February and New York in March/April.
The global debuts are stacking up on L.A.’s roster. A tiny "neo urban transport" concept car from Honda called the P-Nut will be unveiled, created at its Southern California design center. Porsche will debut its new super-light 320 horsepower, Boxster Spyder and Toyota will keep the minivan category alive with a completely redesigned Sienna minivan. GM brings the new Cadillac CTS Coupe and Ford shows off the U.S. version of its Fiesta. Additional surprise global announcements are planned from Volkswagen, Audi and others.
The years of green car planning finally pay off with several 2010 model year production car debuts in every flavor of green – electric, hybrid, clean diesel and hydrogen. In fact, over 50 of these vehicles will be on display at the show including the Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid and the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics Concept.
As for high-end excitement, the LA Auto Show never disappoints, even in the tightest of economic times. Simply looking at these cars provides entertainment value. The $375,000 production version of the Lexus LFA Supercar will be on display as well as the Rolls Royce Ghost -- each making their North American debuts. The V10, 525 horsepower Audi RS Spyder 5.2 FSI will also be on the stand and there will be a Dodge Viper "shrine" displayed at the Chrysler stand with historic racing versions next to the final generation 2010 model.
Other news will flow from the LA show. The future of car design will be debated by design industry leaders, GM’s CEO, Fritz Henderson will address the automotive community and the Green Car of the Year will be awarded.
New this year for show attendees is a kid’s fun zone (opened only on weekend dates) and you'll find exotic customs, tuners, accessories and celebrity cars in the basement of the South Hall at the convention center.
