Infiniti and parent company Nissan will be notably absent from the LA Auto Show this week; they decided to bow out of most US auto shows this year due to the financial crisis. That apparently didn't keep them from using the show as a backdrop for unveiling a couple of new models. They took the wraps off the all-new 2011 Infiniti M during a press conference at the swanky Beverly Hills SLS Hotel last night.
The old M35 will be replaced by the M37 featuring the 3.7-liter V6 engine already available in Infiniti's popular G model. The new engine offers both more power and better fuel economy over the old one. The M45 will be replaced by a new top-of-the-line M56 with a 5.6-liter V8 engine that also offers improved performance and fuel economy over the previous V8. Both engines utilize Infiniti's advanced VVEL (Variable Valve Event & Lift) system and are matched to a 7-speed automatic transmission. Buyers can choose from either rear-wheel or all-wheel drive.
The M's curvy new body minimizes wind noise with a very slippery 0.27 Cd coefficient of drag. Occupants are further buffered from the unpleasantness of the outside world with the Active Noise Control system co-developed with Bose to cancel out harsh engine noises and the Forest Air system which blocks unpleasant odors. Inside passengers can drown out the world with the Bose Studio Surround premium audio system while they enjoy surfaces covered in high-quality leather, wood and metal.
Infiniti packed the M with the usual array of premium technology and safety features. A new Infiniti Drive function allows drivers to select from one of four throttle and transmission mappings to suit their driving style. The Blind Spot Warning system alerts drivers when there's a vehicle in their blind spot, and the Blind Spot Intervention system helps guide the car back to the center of the lane. There are also Lane Departure Warning and Lane Departure Prevention systems to keep you on the straight and narrow, and Intelligent Cruise Control, Distance Control Assist, Intelligent Brake Assist, and Forward Collision Warning systems to help drivers avoid a crash.
Buyers will be able to find the new 2011 Infiniti M at their local Infiniti dealers beginning this spring.
