Chevy Makes a Serious Compact Car Again

Hasn't it been years since Chevrolet made a serious compact car? Chevy plans to bust segment clichés with the all-new Cruze.

For the first time in decades, real attention has been paid to the exterior design ethic of an entry-level Chevrolet. Stretched headlamps flow into strong character lines that add musculature to the Cruze's front fenders. Unlike slab-sided competitors, the Cruze's flanks are sculpted surfaces that allow the paint to show off its depth. Inside, technical fabrics break up dashboard monotony and add texture to the Cruze's interior, which offers the most passenger volume in the segment.

A naturally aspirated 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine is standard, while a 1.4-liter turbocharged motor is optional. The smaller turbocharged engine provides similar horsepower figures, but gives drivers additional torque to handle steep grades or aggressive passing maneuvers. Both engines promise best-in-class fuel economy, at an estimated 40 MPG.

Ten standard airbags help the Cruze achieve a five-star EuroNCAP crash test rating, which could translate into a five-star NHTSA rating when the Cruze reaches American showrooms in late 2010 as a 2011 model.
