At the LA Auto Show, Audi brought their battery-powered e-tron sports car for its first Stateside visit. The concept, which borrows styling cues from Audi's R8 and TT sports cars, can sprint from a standstill to 62 MPH in just 4.8 seconds, while returning a 150 mile range under optimal conditions. Rumors suggest that the all-wheel-drive e-tron may be headed to production to compete with Tesla in the electric supercar niche segment.
Audi also reported strong sales of the diesel-powered A3 TDI compact. The A3's clean diesel powertrain offers a 30 to 40 percent improvement in fuel economy over its gas-powered counterpart. That translates into a 42 MPG highway rating, which impressed the Green Car Journal enough to declare the Audi A3 "Green Car of the Year."
Audi's high-profile diesel racing program presses on in 2010, as the R15 TDI takes on all comers in the American Le Mans series to refine clean diesel technology and increase buyer awareness of the efficiency-minded fuel.
