The stylish Audi A5 coupe and convertible are getting some updates for the new model year. The 2012 A5 features a freshened interior and exterior, new color choices and a new engine for the high-performance S5 model.
The most noticeable changes are on the outside. The 2012 A5 has a new front end with a larger version of Audi's famous grille, more pronounced air intakes and flat fog lights, along with revised headlights and tail lights. Audi says the updated A5 also features a new hood, which includes new "sharply chiseled edges" designed to give it a three-dimensional look.
The 2012 A5 also features a fresh look inside thanks to a new steering wheel, new turn signal stalks, new trim materials and an updated gear lever for automatic-equipped models. A new flat-bottomed steering wheel, similar to the one in the sporty TT, will also be available. Even the A5's key has been updated.
While Audi has yet to release specifics, it did reveal that most of the A5's interior colors will be new for 2012, and that the A5's range of exterior color choices has grown to 16. The convertible soft top on the A5 Cabriolet will be available in four different colors.
But perhaps the biggest news is a new engine for the high-performance S5 model. Last year's 354-horsepower 4.2-liter V8 has been replaced by a more efficient 333-horsepower, 3.0-liter supercharged V6 - the same powerplant found in Audi's impressive S4 sedan. But despite the drop in horsepower, Audi says the S5 won't be lacking in performance: the 2012 S5 can accelerate from zero to 60 miles per hour in less than 4.9 seconds.
We'll likely get our first glimpse of the revised A5 at this year's Frankfurt Motor Show in September. The 2012 Audi A5 is expected to go on sale later this year.
