Once upon a time, the hatchback was the car world's the lowest form of style. Cars like the AMC Pacer and the Geo Metro relegated the hatch to the uncool crowd forever.
But the world is changing now. Responsible versatility is chic, gas mileage is in vogue, and our humble little hatchback? It's hanging out with supermodels in the biggest fashion event of the year.
On Sept. 8, Fiat will release a new Gucci edition Fiat 500 at the New York Fashion Show.
The Fiat 500 by Gucci will be available in both the coupe and convertible models. The doorframes and rear hatch will be accented by chrome Gucci signature logos, while the mirrors, door handles and decorative hood spear will be changed out for satin-chrome pieces.
The car will be available in in either white or black and both will feature Gucci's trademark green-red-green stripes down the side. In the convertible models, the Gucci stripe will also run down the folding cloth top.
The car will roll on a set of 15-inch aluminum wheels that sport Gucci's double-G logo, and the brake calipers are painted Gucci green.
The standard Fiat 500's interior already screams Italian style, so designers had to pull out all the stops when making the 500 by Gucci. The car comes with exclusive embroidery with satin and glossy painted accents. The seats are trimmed in quality 'frau leather' with the traditional Gucci print found on the brand's handbags.
"I am honored that I was able to connect Fiat and Gucci," said Lapo Elkann, who is a world renowned style icon and brand manager for Fiat "Being Italian, it makes me proud to have contributed to this Fiat 500 by Gucci, which brings together the spirit of two brands that so perfectly symbolize our country's savoir faire in the world. "
Pricing details haven't been released yet, but the 500 and 500c by Gucci will show up in Fiat studios around December this year.
