Chevrolet has officially announced a heavy-duty pickup tailored specifically for the Lone Star State. The 2012 Silverado HD Texas Edition joins a series of Texas-themed light-duty Silverados that pay homage to the nation's largest and most competitive pickup market.

Announced ahead of the State Fair of Texas, which opens September 30, the new Silverado HD Texas Edition is based on the pickup's traditional LT trim level. In addition to including all items found on a traditional heavy-duty Silverado LT, the Texas Edition adds several upscale features and unique ?Texas Edition' badging.

"We think the Silverado HD and Texas are a winning combination," said Dave Nottoli, Chevrolet's regional director for sales and marketing. "We started with the Chevrolet Silverado HD, which was the 2011 Motor Trend Truck of the Year, and gave it some Texas attitude, with enhanced exterior style and more interior amenities."

On the outside, enhancements to the 2500HD Texas Edition include 20-inch polished aluminum wheels, fog lights, power camper mirrors with integrated turn signals, chrome door handles, body side molding accents and six-inch oval assist lamps. Inside, the truck adds dual-zone automatic climate control, a six-way power driver seat, a CD player with a USB port, steering wheel mounted audio controls and Bluetooth. The truck also includes a trailering package and an automatic locking differential.

The more utilitarian 3500HD is similarly equipped, though wheels are downgraded to 18 inches on models with single rear wheels and 17 inches on duallys, which feature dual rear wheels on each side. According to Chevrolet, all heavy-duty Texas Edition models are available with the truck's Duramax diesel engine, which sends 397 horsepower and a staggering 765 pound-feet of torque through its 6-speed Allison automatic transmission.

"Texans currently buys about one out of every six heavy-duty pickups sold in the United States," added Nottoli. "When you take the capability of the Silverado HD, then add the features and amenities of the Texas Edition, we think it will be a hit here in the Lone Star State."

Chevrolet has not announced when the heavy-duty Texas Edition will go on sale, but we expect it should begin arriving soon at dealers across the country. Of course, our bet is that the majority of its sales will be in Texas.
