Honda is paying homage to the classic 1980s movie Ferris Bueller's Day Off in a new ad for its compact CR-V SUV that will air during this year's Super Bowl. The ad, which features Matthew Broderick playing himself and mimicking his role as Ferris Bueller, was recently released ahead of its Super Bowl debut in a two-and-a-half minute extended cut on the automaker's YouTube channel.

In the extended version of the ad, Broderick fakes an illness in a call to his agent, just as Ferris Bueller did to his parents when he famously skipped school in the 1986 movie. After his agent urges him to take the day off to get rest, Broderick bolts out of bed, looks outside and exclaims, "How can I handle work on a day like today?" The ad then features Broderick taking part in a series of adventures that recall the classic movie, from riding roller coasters at an amusement park to singing in a parade in Chinatown.

Along the way, Broderick encounters several challenges, including spotting his agent at a stoplight while driving the CR-V. But before the agent notices Broderick playing hooky, the actor places a giant stuffed bear won while he was at the amusement park in the CR-V's passenger seat, obstructing the view. In the final scene, a restaurant valet is shown speeding away in the CR-V and flying over a jump, recalling one of the movie's most famous scenes.

According to Honda, more than two dozen references to the movie are hidden throughout the commercial. While some are obvious - including a hotel valet mimicking Ben Stein's famous monotone voice and repeatedly calling out "Broderick" - the automaker says some references are far more subtle. Honda invites Ferris Bueller fans to try to spot them all and Tweet what they've found using the ad's #dayoff hash tag.

The ad also features several shots of the new 2012 CR-V, which recently entered its fourth generation after making debuting at the Los Angeles Auto Show in November. Featuring a 185-horsepower 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine and available front- or all-wheel drive, the compact SUV boasts impressive fuel economy of more than 25 miles per gallon in combined city and highway driving and a base price of just over $23,000 including destination.

What it means to you: Honda's new ad shows off its humorous side.
