• Replaces GranTurismo S
  • Fits in lineup between base GranTurismo and MC
  • Will debut in Geneva

When car companies launch a new car, they not only have plans for what that car will be on launch day, but throughout its entire lifecycle. These typically manifest themselves as facelifts, mild engine updates and special editions. When you're an exotic manufacturer, these life cycle updates become even more important. It's much more difficult keeping things looking fresh in your stable when your lineup is three or four models versus 12 or 15.

Maserati has exercised this principal with its GranTurismo by updating its mid-range trim package for the Geneva auto show. The grand tourer has been out for five years, which means it's time for a makeover.

The new GranTurismo Sport will take the place of the GranTurismo S in the trim package lineup, right between the base GranTurismo and the track-bred MC. Interestingly, the updated engine for this car will only go in the Sport, at least for now. This means that for a brief amount of time, the Sport will have a 16-horsepower advantage over other versions, including the MC.

Visually, the car gets a new front bumper, which improves aerodynamics and heat dissipation for the brakes and engine. Atop the new bumper sits a new set of headlights, featuring LED daytime running lamps. Inside, the seats have been completely redone and an all-new steering wheel gives the driver something to hold on to.

What it means to you: Without plans for a GranTurismo replacement announced yet, this facelift is Maserati's way of keeping the car fresh a while longer.
