• Scion is offering a hand-held PlayStation Vita to new iQ buyers
  • The promotion runs from May 1 to July 31
  • The iQ went on sale in April and recorded nearly 1,000 sales

The "world's smallest four seater" is now arriving at Scion dealers nationwide - and for a limited time, car shoppers who buy one will get more than just a diminutive new hatchback. The automaker says that buyers of the new 2012 Scion iQ will receive a portable PlayStation Vita when they purchase the city car from now until the end of July.

According to Scion, the program will help iQ owners enjoy their new cars even when they're not in the driver's seat. That's because the hatchback is a playable vehicle in PlayStation Vita's "MotorStorm: RC," a video game that features drivable remote controlled cars. New iQ owners who purchase the game will be able to drive the iQ and several other vehicles using the Vita, which is a handheld video game console equipped with a five-inch touch screen, dual analog sticks, two cameras and a built-in microphone.

The promotion also ties in with the iQ's predicted demographic, which Scion labels a "new trendsetting generation of urban drivers." Like PlayStation Vita buyers, iQ owners are expected to be largely young and technologically adept, with a specific focus on uniqueness and functionality. The hatchback further aligns with the Vita thanks to an impressive array of functionality - including four usable seats - stuffed into a small package.

"Scion is very proud of the iQ's intelligent and functional design," said Scion vice president Jack Hollis. "Similar to the PS Vita, the Scion iQ comes loaded with premium technological features, has a focus on functionality, is concentrated into a suitably small package and most importantly is tons of fun."

Although the PlayStation Vita promotion began on May 1, the iQ went on sale in January and already recorded more than almost 3,500 sales this year - nearly 400 more than its main rival, the two-seater Smart ForTwo. In addition to a 90-horsepower 1.3-liter four-cylinder engine capable of up to 37 miles per gallon in highway driving, the iQ's list of standard equipment includes a continuously-variable automatic transmission, 11 airbags, remote keyless entry, air conditioning and an auxiliary connection for MP3 players - all for around $16,000 including destination.

What it means to you: If you were already considering an iQ, Scion is hoping the promise of a free PlayStation Vita may be enough to seal the deal.
