• Mazda revealed its 2014 Mazda6 sedan
  • The sedan uses Mazda's "Kodo" design language
  • Look for the 2014 Mazda6 to debut next year

Mazda recently showed off its all-new 2014 Mazda6 ahead of the midsize sedan's global debut later this year at the Moscow Auto Show. While Mazda was light on details regarding the US model, the automaker announced information about the Russian version and revealed the sedan's updated exterior styling from in several photos.

From every angle, the Mazda6 appears to have undergone a dramatic transformation as it enters its third generation. That's because the upcoming model now features the brand's "Kodo" design language, which is marked by fluid lines and soft curves intended to provide an impression of movement. Other models also using the "Kodo" stylistic theme include the latest Mazda3 and Mazda5.

In front, the Mazda6 includes a larger grille, restyled fog light housings and more aggressive headlights. While the sedan still features the same oversized front fenders as its predecessor, they've been toned down and integrated into the remainder of the car's lines. Rear-end styling is also completely updated, with the sedan featuring a higher trunk line, updated tail lights and more curves than today's model.

Unfortunately, Mazda has not yet announced any further details about the US-bound 2014 Mazda6 sedan, though the automaker did promise a 2.0-liter "Skyactiv" four-cylinder and available six-speed automatic transmission for the Asian market. We're not sure if that engine will make it stateside, as the smallest powerplant in the current Mazda6 is a 170-horsepower 2.5-liter four-cylinder.

According to Mazda, the 2014 Mazda6 is particularly important to the brand because it's the brand's first car completely designed from the ground up with "Skyactiv" engineering. Unique to Mazda, Skyactiv combines a series of technologies designed to lower vehicle weight, improve engine performance, and - most importantly - boost fuel efficiency. Current Skyactiv technologies include a lightweight chassis, body and transmission, along with highly efficient diesel and gasoline engines.

While Mazda has not yet announced a release date for its upcoming Mazda6, we expect to see the sedan at US auto shows later this year after its August 29 debut in Moscow. The new model is likely to go on sale in early 2013, facing tough competition from newly redesigned rivals like the Nissan Altima and Toyota Camry.

What it means to you: Shoppers interested in today's Mazda6 will likely get a great deal as the 2014 model approaches.
