• Ferrari F12berlinetta, the most powerful V12 Ferrari ever, makes its U.S. debut.
  • First Ferrari for Tailor Made program to arrive in U.S. deliver to Ian Poulter.
  • Highly sought-after classic Ferraris included in auctions and shows.

The prestigious automotive events of Pebble Beach seem a perfect fit for Ferrari. After all, a Ferrari holds the record for the highest auction price ever paid for a car, a 1957 250 Testa Rossa that sold just last year. The price was $16,390,000 and the sale was, in fact, the Gooding & Co. auction at none other than Pebble Beach.

Although a Ferrari has never won the coveted Best in Show prize as the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, the site remains an ideal choice for the U.S. debut of the new F12berlinetta, the most powerful V12 Ferrari to come out of the Maranello, Italy factory. And as attendees see the best vintage Ferraris from around the world at Pebble Beach shows and auctions, Ferrari will also unveil the first vehicle in the U.S. from its Tailor Made program, a bespoke car for British golfer Ian Poulter.

The F12berlinetta is a front-engine two-seat GT that replaces the 599. It's powered by a 6.3-liter direct-injection V12 that produces 740 horsepower and is capable of hurtling the 3,362-lb car from 0 to 200 km/h (124 mph) in just 8.5 seconds. Despite its awesome power, Ferrari says fuel consumption and CO2 emissions are down 30% compared with the 599, reflecting that even exotic sports car makers must now consider efficiency in their designs.

Ferrari's Tailor Made program allows personalization of Ferrari sports cars by the factory, with clients choosing details that suit their tastes. Introduced last year, the program recalls early Ferraris that were often built as one-off examples or as part of a very limited run. The first Tailor Made car in the U.S. is an FF built for Ian Poulter. The FF is an all-wheel drive 2+2 in the shooting brakes style, meaning the body has a squared-off, wagon-like rear section. This custom-appointed FF, finished in "Sabbia," or sand color, includes black Poltrona Frau leather interior with a tartan pattern that matches Poulter's upcoming clothing line. A vehicle's cargo area is important to any golfer, so Poulter's Tailor Made FF includes carbon fiber and sports fabric trim lining the trunk.

Surely a Ferrari will be honored with a Best in Show prize at Pebble Beach eventually. In the meantime, highly valued classic Ferraris and exciting new models from the factory keep the brand squarely in the spotlight.

What it means to you: Ferrari may not be a winner at Pebble Beach Concours, but attendees still flock to see both the vintage Italian sports cars and the latest from the factory, like the Ferrari F12berlinetta.
