Official EPA fuel economy ratings for the 2013 Ford C-MAX Hybrid prove that the automaker sold itself short with early estimates. The 47-mpg city estimate was dead on, but Ford predicted 44 mpg highway while the official EPA numbers are even better. The agency rated the C-MAX Hybrid at 47 mpg highway, too, for a 47-mpg combined rating.
Ford is keen to compare the C-MAX to the Toyota Prius V, which offers similar dimensions and interior volume and also uses a hybrid drivetrain to achieve above-average fuel efficiency. According to the EPA numbers, the Prius v is not quite the fuel miser that the C-MAX is. It's rated at 44 mpg city and 40 mpg highway.
While hybrid vehicles typically yield the greatest advantage over conventional ones in stop-and-go city driving, the C-MAX is well equipped for the long haul, too. The excellent fuel economy rating for the hybrid C-MAX means that drivers can expect to travel 570 miles on a single tank without refueling, even on the highway. Plus, the C-MAX Hybrid offers space for five passengers and cargo along with the versatility of 60/40 fold-flat rear seats.
On shorter trips, the C-MAX can run on electricity only at speeds up to 62 mph. When the all-new 2.0-liter gasoline engine is needed, the hybrid drivetrain delivers maximum output of 188 horsepower to the front wheels. That's a 50-horsepower advantage over the Prius v.
While the C-MAX also offers more overall passenger volume than the Prius v, the longer Toyota has a bit more cargo space and a second-row seat that reclines and can slide back and forth.
The 2013 Ford C-MAX Hybrid has not landed in Ford showrooms yet, but dealers are taking orders. The hybrid utility vehicle has a starting manufacturer's suggested retail price of $25,995 including destination charge. This fall, the C-MAX Energi, a plug-in hybrid version with a 20-mile electric-only range, joins the lineup.
What it means to you: The C-MAX Hybrid delivers excellent 47-mpg fuel economy regardless of driving type - city, highway or both.
