The performance-oriented 2013 Lexus LS 460 F Sport will start at $82,885, including an $895 destination charge, when it goes on sale in mid-November. That's the latest from the upscale Toyota brand, which says that the sporty full-size luxury sedan will feature several driver-oriented revisions and stylistic upgrades over the traditional LS sedan.

According to Lexus, the $82,885 figure is for a rear-wheel-drive LS 460 F Sport, making the sporty luxury sedan exactly $10,000 more expensive than the base-level 2013 LS 460. Drivers interested in adding the year-round security of all-wheel drive to their LS 460 F Sport will have to pay $85,780 with destination for the privilege--a slightly higher premium over the all-wheel-drive 2013 LS 460, which starts at $75,830.

But the extra cost adds a lot of sporty equipment to the traditionally sedate LS 460 sedan. While its 386-horsepower 4.6-liter V8 remains unchanged, the LS 460 F Sport boasts a lowered stance to improve handling, sport-tuned air suspension, unique 19-inch alloy wheels and high-performance Brembo brakes. Rear-wheel-drive models also include a Torsen limited-slip differential, which allows the LS 460 F Sport to get around corners more quickly than its standard counterpart.

The 2013 Lexus LS 460 F Sport also includes several interior upgrades over the standard LS. In addition to heavily bolstered sport seats designed to offer support around curves, the F Sport features steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters for drivers looking to increase engine control. The F Sport also includes aluminum interior trim in place of wood to emphasize its sporty character.

Lexus derives its F Sport model designation from the sporty IS-F sedan, a high-performance derivative of the IS 250 and 350 sport sedans. Other F Sport models include the CT 200h F Sport hatchback, the IS F Sport sedan and the RX 350 F Sport luxury crossover. The brand's sporty presence is undoubtedly designed to compete with luxury rivals such as BMW, Audi and Mercedes, each of which offers enthusiasts a line of high-performance vehicles.

With its base price of nearly $73,000, the LS lineup adds nearly $4,000 to last year's starting figure. According to Lexus, that's due to several new standard features, including a navigation system with a center-mounted 12.3-in touchscreen. The range-topping 2013 LS 600hL hybrid, which recorded a mere 84 sales last year, now starts at $120,805 with shipping--a $7,160 increase over the 2012 model.

What it means to you: With the LS 460 F Sport, Lexus is trying to inject some performance into its notoriously serene lineup--and, come November, buyers can decide if the automaker was successful.
