Today, the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado and 2014 GMC Sierra debuted in Detroit. In the past, the trucks have been nearly identical siblings, and while they'll still share the same mechanical underpinnings, GM now plans to distinguish between the models more than ever before.

For example, the interior materials are different. If you order a version of the Sierra with metallic trim inside, it will be real metal or aluminum trim, not so in the Chevy. Even the leathers and plastics are unique to each truck. The GMC gets higher quality leather and finer touches all around, even on the base model. Before, if you had a base model Sierra and a base model Silverado, they looked very similar inside. Functional differences mean the Sierra gets features like projector headlights, LED lights in the bed (4 mounted under the bed's upper rails) and tie-downs as standard, but they're optional equipment on the Silverado.

Both trucks receive one of three new EcoTec3 engines ?a 4.3-liter V6, 5.3-liter V8 or a 6.2-liter V8. All feature variable valve timing, direct injection and cylinder deactivation to maximize both power and fuel economy. Both trucks now carry a stronger rear axle to handle the new lineup's extra torque. The trucks also have more spacious, luxurious interiors. They benefit from easy-entry rear doors that can swing out farther, optional heated cloth seats and an adaptive exhaust for a quieter ride. One big change is that extended cab trucks now get traditional swing out rear doors rather than the clam-shell type that can be less than ideal in crowded parking lots. GM has real truck people in mind, too, as most buttons and controls are designed to be functional even when the driver is wearing gloves. Chevrolet's MyLink and GMC's IntelliLink are available too.

Finally, both the 2014 GMC Sierra and 2014 Chevrolet Silverado offer several new driver assistance and safety technologies, including forward collision alert, lane departure warning, hill start assist, stability control and trailer anti-sway controls. For folks interested in off-roading capabilities, the Z71 suspension is still available and includes features like Rancho shocks and hill descent control.
