While many shoppers need an all-wheel drive vehicle for practical reasons, not everyone wants an SUV. We understand--and to help those buyers find the right car, we've created a list of our favorite all-wheel drive sedans just in time for winter snow and spring showers. We've tried to hit every price point so drivers can find a good all-weather sedan for any budget.
Audi is known for its "Quattro" all-wheel drive system. While the compact A4 sport sedan comes with front-wheel drive, Quattro is just $2,100 extra. All A4 models use a 211-hp 4-cylinder. The sporty, AWD-only S4 uses a 333-hp V6. Gas mileage for the A4 reaches up to 31 mpg with the standard 6-speed manual or 29 mpg with the optional 8-speed auto. All A4 models include features like a sunroof, satellite radio and leather. Pricing starts around $34,000 for a manual A4 Quattro and $1,500 more for an automatic.
While it has standard rear-wheel drive, Cadillac's sporty CTS also offers optional all-wheel drive. AWD models start just over $46,000, or around $2,000 more than a similar RWD model. The sedan's base engine is a 270-hp V6, while a 318-hp V6 is optional. A standard 6-speed automatic returns around 18 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway. We especially like the CTS for offering bold styling, sharp handling and all-weather appeal.
The new Ford Fusion offers optional AWD. That's good news for shoppers up north, since most midsize sedans don't offer the feature. In the Fusion, it's only available with the high-end $33,000 Titanium trim. But while it may be pricey, the Fusion Titanium is loaded. It includes heated seats, leather, a rearview camera and keyless access and starting. It also uses Ford's new 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine. That motor boasts a muscular 240 hp but still returns 22 mpg city and 31 mpg highway, giving drivers power, efficiency and AWD traction.
The Taurus is a great choice for shoppers interested in a large sedan with year-round utility. While base models are front-wheel drive, AWD is offered on SEL and Limited trims for $1,850 extra. A 288-hp V6 is standard, while a 240-hp 4-cylinder is newly optional for better mileage. A Taurus may also appeal to enthusiasts, as the sporty SHO comes standard with AWD. But the best value is the AWD Taurus SEL, which starts at $31,400 and has a remote starter and dual-zone automatic climate control.
The Impreza is a great choice for drivers who don't need a large vehicle. It's also a good deal, starting from around $18,000. And it has standard all-wheel drive, providing year-round traction. Most Impreza models use a 148-hp 4-cylinder that can reach 36 mpg, while the sporty Impreza WRX uses a 265-hp engine. Available features include a sunroof, a navigation system and an iPod hookup. For drivers interested in more utility, Subaru also offers the Impreza in 5-door hatchback guise.
Along with the Ford Fusion, the Subaru Legacy is one of few midsize sedans with all-wheel drive. It comes in two flavors. Base models use a 170-hp 2.5-liter 4-cylinder and start at $21,000. Subaru also offers a 3.6-liter 6-cylinder in high-end versions. That model starts around $26,000. In addition to standard AWD, all Legacy models feature side curtain airbags, anti-lock brakes, keyless entry and automatic lights. A 6-speed manual is standard on base models, while an optional CVT automatic returns up to 31 mpg. Six-cylinder versions are automatic-only and return 18 mpg city and 25 mpg highway.
Suzuki's departure from the US market means there are great deals on most leftover vehicles. That's true of the Kizashi sedan--already a good value with a starting price around $23,500 in AWD guise. That price includes keyless access with push-button starting, a USB port for music, curtain side airbags and dual-zone automatic air conditioning. It also features a 185-hp 2.4-liter 4-cylinder that can reach 29 highway mpg. Shoppers concerned about Suzuki's demise don't need to worry, as the brand will honor its warranties.
