• 2014 Chevrolet SS offers a 415-horsepower 6.2-liter V8

Chevrolet has finally pulled the cover off its all-new 2014 SS sedan. The automaker revealed the SS at the Daytona International Speedway, touting the full-size, rear-wheel-drive sedan's high-performance prowess.

Outside, the sedan is very much Chevrolet. While the front end hardly resembles any of the brand's current models, the rear lights and trunk share their shape with the 2013 Malibu. LED running lights are housed in the SS model's bumpers, while a tall vertical vent behind the front wheels gives character on either side.

Inside, the sedan offers a high-quality look. That's important, since the SS will serve as Chevrolet's flagship 4-door, slotted above the Malibu and the upcoming 2014 Impala. In photos, high-end surfaces are numerous. And a stylish center stack houses Chevrolet's MyLink infotainment touchscreen.

Under the hood, the SS offers just one engine. That's a 6.2-liter V8 that will produce 415 hp and 415 lb-ft of torque. Interestingly, the SS uses the same 6.2-liter V8 from the current Corvette -- not the all-new motor that will debut in the seventh-generation 'Vette that reaches showrooms later this year.

While the news of a rear-drive, V8-powered sedan will excite enthusiasts, some may be disappointed by one detail: The sedan's only transmission is a 6-speed automatic. And while the SS includes steering wheel-mounted shift paddles and scoots to 60 miles per hour in around five seconds, many purists will yearn for three pedals.

Those who don't mind the automatic will find that the SS offers several exciting new features. Sport-minded drivers will enjoy standard 19-inch wheels wrapped in low-profile tires for optimal handling. They'll also like the standard Brembo brakes and steering that Chevrolet says is tuned for sport driving.

Shoppers looking for cutting edge technology will also find that in the SS. In addition to MyLink and a push-button starter, the SS offers a full-color heads-up display that projects on to its windshield. It also includes advanced safety features like forward collision alert, a lane departure warning, a reversing camera and a blind spot monitoring system.

Based on the Australian-market Holden Commodore, the SS is Chevrolet's first rear-wheel-drive sedan since the Impala abandoned the layout after 1996. The SS also provides stylistic guidance to Chevrolet's new NASCAR, also dubbed SS, which was revealed last year.

Chevrolet has not yet announced pricing for the SS, but we expect to know more details closer to the sedan's arrival during the third quarter of 2013.

What it means to you: If you mourned the loss of the 1996 Impala SS and the Ford Crown Victoria, the 2014 Chevrolet SS might be the car for you.
