• May 15 reveal for 2014 Mercedes Benz S-Class
  • Sedan will use aluminum architecture
  • Sales will start by the end of 2013

Mercedes is slowly revealing details about its upcoming S-Class. The brand recently announced that the upcoming luxury sedan will be officially revealed on May 15. It also released several details about the sedan ahead of its big launch.

According to Mercedes, the reveal of the new S-Class model on May 15 precedes the sedan's start of production. That will happen in August, with sales beginning in September. While Mercedes didn't specify if those dates were specific to the German market, the flagship luxury sedan will almost certainly go on sale in the U.S. by the end of the year.

Mercedes also announced that, once again, the V8-powered S550 will be the first model to debut in the S-Class lineup. It will be closely followed by an all-wheel-drive S550 4Matic. A high-performance S63 AMG will also join the S-Class range by the end of 2013. Unlike prior S63 AMG models, the latest S63 AMG will be offered solely in all-wheel-drive guise.

While Mercedes has not shown any official photos of the sedan, the automaker's teaser images show a new shape that's still distinctively Mercedes. The new S-Class will be crafted partly from aluminum, which will save weight and increase fuel economy. Rival luxury sedans such as the Audi A8 and Jaguar XJ also use aluminum construction.

As always, the latest S-Class is expected to feature considerable technology. For example, a Night View Assist PLUS system scans the road at night for upcoming hazards. And a new Magic Body Control system prepares the suspension for upcoming roadway imperfections to improve ride quality. An all-new 9-speed automatic transmission will be standard, helping drivers get the best gas mileage and acceleration.

The latest S-Class represents Mercedes' ninth-generation flagship sedan, and the sixth to be officially called the S-Class. The outgoing model debuted in the U.S. as a 2007 model. Initially offered only in S550 and S63 AMG trims like the latest S-Class, today's model range expanded to include a diesel-powered S350 BlueTec, a hybrid S400H and V12-powered S600 and S65 AMG models.

We'll likely know if the latest S-Class will add those variants as it gets closer to launch. We also expect to learn more details about the sedan -- including pricing and engine specs -- as we edge closer to its official unveiling.

What it means to you: The 2014 Mercedes Benz S-Class will likely set the standard for the next generation of luxury sedans.
