• 2014 CTS to offer twin-turbo 3.6L V6
  • Engine will produce 420 horsepower
  • More details to come at NY Auto Show

The 2014 Cadillac CTS will offer a new engine when it debuts later this month at the New York Auto Show. Cadillac recently announced plans to offer its updated sedan with a twin-turbo V6, which will produce enough power to trump nearly every rival.

According to Cadillac, the twin-turbo V6 will be a 3.6-liter unit that makes a muscular 420 horsepower. That's more than such pricey rivals as the BMW 550i, which has 400 horsepower, and the Mercedes-Benz E550, which offers 382 horses.

Of course, the biggest difference between the CTS's new engine and those of rivals is that the CTS will only offer six cylinders. The two turbochargers will make up the difference. The result is that the CTS likely will offer better gas mileage than rivals, even in spite of its larger horsepower rating. Cadillac estimates the engine's fuel economy at 17 miles per gallon in the city and 25 mpg on the highway.

While Cadillac has yet to show off its new CTS, the automaker is eager to brag about the sedan's new engine. According to the General Motors luxury brand, CTS models equipped with the twin-turbo V6 will be able to reach 60 miles per hour from a stop in around 4.6 seconds. They'll also boast a sports-car-fast top speed of 170 mph.

Shoppers excited about the twin-turbo V6 will be pleased to discover the CTS won't be Cadillac's only model to offer the engine. The automaker also plans to use the powerplant in its upcoming 2014 Cadillac XTS sedan. Today's XTS uses a nonturbocharged 3.6-liter V6, just like the current Cadillac CTS. That engine is also used in the ATS sedan and SRX crossover.

We'll have more information on the 2014 Cadillac CTS and its new twin-turbocharged V6 when it debuts later this month in New York.

What it means to you: We'll find out in a few days if the upcoming CTS is as impressive as its new twin-turbo V6.
