• Special Edition for already-special Raptor
  • Exclusive exterior paint and graphics
  • Unique, 2-tone seats

The Raptor is already a special version of the Ford F-150 pickup, an off-road specialist created by Ford's Special Vehicles Team (SVT). But later this year, the 2014 Ford Raptor will be available with Special Edition trim, adding even more exclusivity to an already unique vehicle.

SVT introduced the Raptor as a 2010 model and has steadily added more capability and features over the years. The Raptor Special Edition for 2014 doesn't get any additional off-road equipment to improve its performance. Instead, its improvements are limited to interior and exterior styling touches that set it apart from more common Raptors.

Ford will offer two exterior paint choices for the Special Edition Raptor. Ruby Red Metallic is available only on the Special Edition. The second choice is Tuxedo Black, which is already available for the 2013 Raptor. Only the Special Edition gets bold Raptor graphics applied to its bed sides.

Inside, the Special Edition 2014 Ford Raptor gets a 2-tone treatment in black and a subdued brick-red color. Seating is black, highlighted by red, for the bolsters and headrests. A honeycomb-pattern cloth tops the console and center stack, and also carries over to the door panel inserts.

The Raptor is available as either an extended-cab SuperCab or 4-door SuperCrew. Both pack a long list of off-road equipment, plus a big, 411-horsepower V8 under the hood. To get the Special Edition, you'll also need to choose the Luxury Package. For the 2013 model year, it adds about $4,760 to the price of a Raptor and includes navigation, dual-zone automatic climate control, power seats with memory and a backup camera. Ford has not yet announced pricing for the 2014 Raptor.

Like some exotic sports cars, the Raptor looks almost as cool standing still as it does in motion. Seeing a Raptor in a parking lot is not quite as exciting as seeing one crawl up a rugged trail, but it will still draw people in with its aggressive look. Although the Special Edition does not offer any new capability off-road, it does enable owners to stand out with exclusive styling on an already special vehicle.

What it means to you: If you love the wild look of the SVT Raptor but prefer a more exclusive feel, consider the Special Edition version offered for the 2014 model year and due out this fall.
