- FIAT 500L offered in four trim levels
- Pricing ranges from $19,900 to $24,995
- No-cost Premier Package adds navigation, reversing camera
According to FIAT, the $19,900 pricing figure buys the base-level 500L Pop. Like all FIAT 500L models, that one is powered by a 160-horsepower 1.4-liter MultiAir turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. That's the same engine in our long-term Dodge Dart (link to introduction). It's also the same powerplant in FIAT's new 500 Turbo.
In the Pop trim level, a six-speed manual is standard. Other standard features include 16-inch wheels with hubcaps, air conditioning, cruise control and split-folding rear seats. The 500L Pop also features a five-inch, center-mounted touchscreen. Navigation isn't standard, but Bluetooth and a USB port are.
The new model in the hatchback's lineup is dubbed the 500L Easy. Prices for the Easy start a $20,995 with shipping. For that figure, you get 16-inch alloy wheels and a premium sound system. You also get a host of trim upgrades like a leather-wrapped steering wheel, tinted windows, and body-colored door mirror caps.
The next step up is the 500L Trekking, which starts at $21,995 with shipping. FIAT says this model is the "perfect blend of rugged styling and versatility." Upgrades over the Easy include more aggressive front and rear fascias, colored wheel arch moldings and 17-inch alloy wheels.
Topping the 500L range is the upscale 500L Lounge, which starts at $24,995 with shipping. An automatic transmission is standard in the Lounge. Other standard equipment includes leather seats, heated front seats and dual-zone automatic climate control.
During the 500L's first year, the brand will also offer a "Premier Package" at no charge. Usually $1,700, the package boasts a reversing camera, a larger touchscreen and navigation.
The 500L is a front-wheel drive, 5-door hatchback designed to compete with models like the Mini Countryman and Volkswagen Golf. It's for shoppers who enjoy the tiny 500's styling and heritage, but need a bigger vehicle. In addition to offering five seats, the 500L boasts a large 120-cubic-foot cargo area.
What it means to you: The 2014 FIAT 500L provides a new choice for shoppers interested in a practical, fuel-efficient hatchback.
