• 2014 GMC Sierra regular cab unveiled
  • Boasts largely similar styling to other models
  • Goes on sale this summer from around $25,000

GMC has unveiled a new version of its all-new Sierra pickup. While the fully redesigned 2014 Sierra was first shown as a 4-door crew cab, the latest variant is a short-bed, regular cab model.

Although the regular cab Sierra's styling wasn't in much doubt, the latest photos will still appeal to those interested in the smallest version yet of GM's newly redesigned pickups. The regular cab Sierra retains the crew cab's large wheel arches, chrome grille and brawny, muscular lines.

GMC revealed the regular cab Sierra online while touting the vehicle's aerodynamics. Despite the truck's blocky shape, GMC says the all-new Sierra spent more development time in a wind tunnel than any General Motors pickup before it. The result is improved airflow for better wind resistance. That leads to reduced cabin noise and, more importantly, better gas mileage.

Regular cab versions of the all-new Sierra will be the model's least expensive body style. The regular-cab 2014 Sierra is available with two bed lengths: 6.6 feet and 8 feet. In the newly released photos, the truck sports its smaller bed.

While Chevrolet has not shown photos of its regular cab Silverado, the truck will likely share many lines with the Sierra. Both are due out this summer. GM says crew cab trucks will come first, though regular cab and extended models -- dubbed Extended Cab by GM -- won't be far behind.

According to GMC, the all-new Sierra regular cab will start $500 above last year's base price. That means the base-level 2014 Sierra will likely come in just under $25,000 with shipping. The Chevrolet Silverado's base pricing was unchanged for the new model year. As a result, the 2014 Silverado starts closer to $24,000.

General Motors says both the Sierra and Silverado will offer three engines. A 4.3-liter V6 will be standard. Drivers who want more power can upgrade to a 5.3-liter V8, while a 6.2-liter V8 tops the range. All three engines are completely new and boost the trucks' gas mileage while reducing emissions.

What it means to you: If you're in the market for a new pickup this summer, the 2014 GMC Sierra should definitely be on your test drive list.
