- Special, wide-body edition of the 911 Carrera S
- Production limited to 1,963 units
- Arrives this fall, with pricing starting at $124,100
Fifty years have passed, but the 911 remains a favorite of the go-fast set, still garners plenty of critical acclaim and posts myriad racing victories to back up its reputation. In celebration of this milestone, Porsche announced the 911 50th Anniversary Edition. Production numbers, limited to 1,963 cars, reference the 911's debut year.
So what makes this special edition special, aside from the 911 50 badge on the engine cover and the requisite numbered plate on the center console? The Carrera S-based model features the wide body of the Carrera 4 model, plus some extra performance upgrades and distinctive styling elements.
To boost output, Porsche fitted the special edition with its Powerkit, which includes modified cylinder heads and camshafts, a revised intake and engine control unit, sport exhaust and Porsche's Sport Chrono Package. The outcome is, of course, more power -- 430 horsepower in comparison to 400 hp without the Powerkit.
The look of the wide body is certainly unique on a rear-wheel-drive Carrera S, but Porsche also includes some exterior details in chrome to differentiate the special edition. Chrome strips for the engine cover grille give the car a throwback look, with a definite visual reference to the original Porsche 911 from 1963.
Three exterior colors are available, and include black and two shades of gray. Inside, buyers also can choose from gray or black leather, but both have tartan fabric seat inserts that hark back to the upholstery of the early 911s.
The starting price for the 911 50th Anniversary Edition is $125,050 including a $950 destination charge, and Porsche will begin deliveries this fall. Express your interest now if you'd like to be one of the 1,963 owners of this special edition, though. This latest 911 moves faster than ever.
What it means to you: In celebration of the model's 50th anniversary, Porsche is offering the 911 50th Anniversary Edition for later this year, and it's equipped with performance upgrades and some cool retro styling details.
