• Next-gen CTS is longer but lower and lighter, too

The completely redesigned 2014 Cadillac CTS, the luxury automaker's midsize sedan, arrives at dealers this fall. It's considerably longer than the outgoing CTS, improving passenger space. The new CTS has more features, too, such as the CUE infotainment interface included as standard equipment. But with a starting suggested price of $46,025, it's also significantly pricier than its predecessor.

Cadillac stretched the latest, third-generation CTS out by five inches in overall length, bringing it in line with the growing midsize offerings from its luxury competitors. The result is more space for passengers in nearly every dimension. The exception is rear-seat legroom; it's been reduced slightly, which is odd, given the extra body length.

Despite the increase in length, the 2014 Cadillac CTS is actually lighter than the outgoing car. It's also nearly an inch lower, which could contribute to better efficiency. The official Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) fuel economy estimates are not yet available, but Cadillac expects an advantage of up to 3 miles per gallon from the new CTS compared with the 2013 model.

Like the second-generation CTS sedan it replaces, the latest model will be offered with several engine choices. Instead of the base 3.0-liter V6 in the last CTS, the new one gets a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine. It's good for 272 horsepower, a bit more than the old base V6. The optional 3.6-liter V6 remains available also, with output up slightly to 321 hp. And for those who demand even greater performance, the new 2014 CTS Vsport gets a twin-turbo 3.6-liter V6 that cranks out 420 hp.

Four-cylinder versions use a 6-speed automatic transmission, while V6 models get an 8-speed automatic gearbox. Rear-wheel drive is standard, and all-wheel drive is available on all but the Vsport CTS sedan.

Cadillac offers three trim levels for the 2014 CTS: Luxury, Performance and Premium. Standard features include CUE and an 11-speaker Bose audio system. The base Luxury model is now available with Cadillac's Magnetic Ride Control, an adaptive suspension that automatically balances ride quality and handling.

At more than $46,000 including destination charge, the starting price of the 2014 CTS is up significantly. By comparison, the outgoing model has a starting price under $40,000. The new, top-trim CTS Vsport, meanwhile, is priced at $59,995.

What it means to you: If you must have the latest Cadillac midsize sedan, wait for the completely redesigned 2014 CTS that arrives this fall. Otherwise, act quickly on a 2013 CTS while they last. You can use the money you save to load it up with optional equipment.
