- 3 Series coupe replaced by new 4 Series
- 4- and 6-cylinder choices offered
- Priced from $41,425
BMW announced pricing and specifications for its newest line of 2-door models. The 2014 BMW 4 Series replaces the 3 Series coupe and is lower, longer and wider than its predecessor. It will soon be available with either 4- or 6-cylinder power and standard rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. Pricing starts at just over $41,000.
The lineup includes four models and four trim choices, starting with the 428i. It gets a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine and standard 8-speed automatic transmission, though buyers with sporty intentions can opt for a 6-speed manual gearbox at no extra charge. With an MSRP of $41,125, the 428i is the most affordable 4 Series model.
Buyers in cold climates may prefer the 428i xDrive, which adds BMW's all-wheel-drive system; it's priced at $43,425. BMW does not offer the manual transmission option for the 428i xDrive.
For those looking for more power, the 435i may be the better choice. It packs a 3.0-liter turbocharged 6-cylinder good for 300 horsepower-- 60 hp more than the 4-cylinder. It's enough to send the 8-speed 435i rocketing from 0 to 60 mph in just five seconds, according to BMW. Choose the 6-speed manual and acceleration suffers slightly. The MSRP for the 435i is $46,925.
Combining the more powerful motor and all-wheel drive is the 435i xDrive. It's priced at $48,925 and, unlike the 428i xDrive, can be specified with the no-cost manual transmission option.
Four trim lines are available: base, Sport Line, Luxury Line and M Sport. The Sport Line uses black exterior details and gets sporty touches inside, such as contrasting red stitching. The Luxury Line uses more chrome trim on the outside and includes wood accents for the interior. Finally, the M Sport achieves a performance look and feel with an aerodynamic body kit, special M finishes in the cabin and performance components, such as a sport suspension for rear-wheel-drive models.
What it means to you: Its name may have changed from 3 Series coupe to 4 Series, but the fundamentals remain the same for BMW's popular coupe: sporty dynamics, luxurious appointments and sleek, 2-door style. Look for the 2014 BMW 4 Series in BMW showrooms beginning late this summer.
