- Mazda says debut is first-ever live streamed car introduction
Mazda is teaming up with Microsoft on the first-ever vehicle introduction to be streamed live around the world. The event, which will take place next week on Xbox Live, likely marks the debut of Mazda's all-new 2014 Mazda3 compact.
According to Mazda, the vehicle's unveiling will take place on Wednesday, June 26 in New York City. The debut, which starts at 9:00 p.m. EST, will be shown worldwide on Microsoft's Xbox Live online video game platform. The Mazda3 will also be revealed in Melbourne, St. Petersburg, Istanbul and London.
"It's a digitally connected world, so what better way to reach our customers than through a connected platform like Xbox," said Russell Wager, Mazda's vice president of marketing. "We were looking for a way to launch a global product and tie together our five separate reveals. Xbox not only gave us the platform, but allowed us to leverage our digital assets to drive a global audience to view the event."
To help build awareness for the reveals, Mazda plans to launch a series of related promotions. In addition to a Twitter hashtag -- #GameChanger -- Mazda will get its own landing page on the Xbox website. The page will include event details, a countdown clock and sweepstakes that could earn one lucky entrant $2,500 toward the music event of their choice.
The debut will feature Canadian indie-rock band Metric, which is known for several popular albums. Those who watch the unveiling will get to see the band perform, and also win a "#GameChanger" T-shirt for their Xbox Live avatar.
While Mazda hasn't confirmed it, it's widely expected that the car to be unveiled is the all-new 2014 Mazda3. The compact will likely feature a long list of new styling and equipment compared to its predecessor, which debuted for the 2010 model year.
The reveal is a big one for Mazda, as the Mazda3 is the brand's most popular vehicle. The choice to reveal the new model on Xbox Live likely stems from its popularity among younger shoppers.
What it means to you: If you're interested in a compact car, the all-new Mazda3 may be worth the wait.
