• Manual transmission 'Vette will return 30 mpg in Eco mode
  • City fuel economy rated at 17 mpg
  • Automatic model not yet rated

The all-new 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray may be a high-performance sports car, but it returns economy-car gas mileage. The automaker recently announced the redesigned 'Vette will return up to 30 miles per gallon in highway driving.

According to Chevrolet, that figure comes from the car's Eco mode. That's a driver-selectable setting that tells the engine precisely how to operate. While Chevrolet hasn't announced exactly what the Eco mode involves, we imagine it includes low revs and conservative shifting.

For drivers who want to enjoy their sports car a little more, the Corvette will also offer a Tour mode. That setting returns around 28 mpg on the highway -- likely the result of increased engine capabilities. Chevrolet says both settings return 17 mpg in city driving.

While 17 mpg city/30 mpg hwy may not seem like much, it's big news in the sports car world. That's especially true since today's Corvette returns 16 mpg city/26 mpg hwy. In other words, the new model manages better gas mileage and more horsepower.

Indeed, the 2014 Corvette Stingray boasts a whopping 455 hp. That's 25 more than last year's model. Torque is increased even further, jumping from 424 lb-ft to a brawny 460 lb-ft. And the latest Corvette offers an available 7-speed manual, which offers one extra gear -- and with it, an expected performance boost -- in comparison to the 2013 model.

But gas-conscious sports car fans shouldn't head to the Chevy dealer just yet. One reason is that the 2014 Corvette is not yet in dealerships. Chevy says the new model won't be on sale in September. Also, the fuel economy figures only apply to the 7-speed manual transmission. Drivers interested in mpg numbers with the 6-speed automatic will have to wait until we get a little closer to the car's launch date.

Nonetheless, the Corvette is coming -- and between its 30-mpg fuel rating and its reasonable $53,000 base price, it may appeal to more than just thrill-seeking car shoppers who want to go fast.

What it means to you: The 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray boasts up to 30 mpg -- though we find it hard to believe any 'Vette owner will ever get close to that figure.
