• Convoy of 2013 Land Rover LR4 SUVs
  • Month-long off-road trip covering 5,000 miles
  • Short sections of pavement connecting off-road route

Some say a road trip across the United States is a rite of passage that every American should experience. A transcontinental driving adventure lets you see the land and its features change as the miles tick by. But imagine that same trip with very little pavement, following off-road trails stretching from North Carolina to Oregon. The pace and scenery along such a route would be quite different from driving the interstates. A scenic route is the one of choice for an expedition of three 2013 Land Rover LR4 luxury sport utility vehicles now making their way across the country.

Sponsored by the automaker, the trip is called Land Rover Expedition America -- Tackling the Trans-America Trail. The three vehicles began the journey at the Land Rover Driving Experience at the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, N.C., on July 26. The crew is led by Land Rover driving instructor Tom Collins. The expedition will cross 10 states and cover 5,000 miles when the team reaches its end point in Oregon.

Although the vehicle of choice is a luxury SUV, the 2013 Land Rover LR4 is well-equipped for an off-road trip like this one. Its 5-liter V8 produces 375 horsepower and 375 lb-ft of torque, with plenty of output available at low, off-road engine speeds. The LR4 also has a drivetrain purposefully packed with off-road essentials. Permanent 4-wheel drive and a locking center differential are standard. A locking rear differential, 2-speed transfer case and height-adjustable air suspension are all available options.

The team will encounter some pavement along the journey. A few sections of connecting roads link their trail route, mostly on the East Coast and some in Colorado. But a transcontinental off-road trip is still largely possible, even in 2013. To some, that might sound like a terrible idea. To those with a sense of adventure, however, such a trip could be the experience of a lifetime.

What it means to you: Follow along on Land Rover's blog, Facebook or Instagram as Land Rover Expedition America makes an almost exclusively off-road trip from North Carolina to Oregon. And if you're shopping for an off-road-ready SUV, the Land Rover LR4 just might be the perfect choice.
