Hyundai has released two teaser images of its upcoming revised Elantra sedan. While the images don't show much, they preview Hyundai's intent to give the car a new look in the image of the larger Hyundai Azera.
In front, the updated Elantra will definitely gain a new fascia. That includes an updated front bumper, revised headlights and a new grille. Rear styling updates are less clear -- since one of the teaser images focuses on the car's front end -- though it's certain the Elantra will offer new taillights to go with its updated look.
While it's unknown if the Elantra's face-lift will come as a 2014 or a 2015 model, either would be an early revision for the compact sedan. The current Elantra came out for the 2011 model year, meaning it's only expected to go three years before the face-lift. That's a short time period -- and one that proves Hyundai is committed to remaining on top of its compact sedan game.
Beyond exterior updates, we don't expect many changes from the revised Elantra. A few interior revisions are likely, as are some trim level and equipment tweaks. But the sedan's engine -- a 148-horsepower 1.8-liter 4-cylinder -- is likely to remain the only powertrain. A new turbodiesel 4-cylinder will be offered in some markets, but not in the U.S.
Originally on sale for the 1991 model year, the Elantra has continually increased in popularity, especially after major overhauls in 2001, 2007 and 2011. Today's Elantra is built in the U.S. and offers two transmission choices -- a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic. The current Elantra lineup includes a 4-door sedan, a 2-door coupe and a 5-door hatchback dubbed the Elantra GT.
While Hyundai hasn't announced when the face-lifted Elantra will reach dealers, we'd expect to see it early next year.
