What Is It?
The Mercedes-Benz Concept S-Class Coupe is a 2-door reimagining of the 2014 S-Class, the company's large luxury sedan and flagship model. This current generation of the sedan came out to much acclaim earlier in 2013. The technology for both safety and comfort is unsurpassed.
This rakish 4-seater coupe has all those features and, in this Frankfurt Auto Show model, matches them to a 4.7-liter, twin-turbo V8 engine that develops 440 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque. The interior has a touchscreen that offers four world clocks as well as a carpet and headliner made of silk.
The company says it "really stands for modern luxury," calling the vehicle "the most beautiful way to drive an S-Class."
To underline those sentiments, the car's introduction at the 2013 Frankfurt Auto Show took place on a massive, morphing stage set, boasting a space and budget that Cirque du Soleil would kill for. Instead of the usual piped corporate techno music that car companies seem to purchase by the yard for events such as these, this occasion had real musicians, singers and dancers performing a specially written piece.
Will They Ever Sell It?
Absolutely. Starting next year, though possibly without the silk furnishings (liberal amounts of leather and wood will compensate). Mercedes-Benz is calling it a concept right now, but it's so far along the path to production that we'll be seeing something incredibly similar on the streets. The streets of extremely well-to-do households, that is.
Why It's Important
Even though there's never been a model called the S-Class Coupe up to this point, the CL-Class has fulfilled that function for three generations. One significant detail the CL and the Mercedes-Benz Concept S-Class Coupe share is the missing B-pillar. From the windshield frame to the rear window is a swooping arc over glass. This car effectively consigns the CL badge to history and takes a name that describes the machine for what it really is. Chances are a high-performance AMG version will come down the pipeline, and there's even a rumor of a convertible, which really would be something new.
