What Is It?

The Opel Insignia is a midsize sedan that's popular among European drivers. In the U.S., the Insignia is sold as the Buick Regal -- and that's why we've included it here. The latest Insignia is revised from the current model, boasting upgraded front and rear styling along with a new interior. Expect those changes to reach the Regal eventually. But don't expect the entire Insignia lineup to reach our shores: Opel also showed off a station wagon body style that's unlikely to find its way to the U.S. market.

When the face-lifted model does come here, expect to pay around the same price as today's Regal -- from $30,000 to $36,000.

Likely next year, as a 2015 model.

Add It to Your Shopping List Because...

The Buick Regal is already a highly competent sedan, provided buyers are willing to give the Buick brand a chance. With its latest updates, the Regal gains revised styling and a new interior -- touches that will help to further modernize the car. For the rare drivers interested in a wagon, keep an eye on the Regal. While it's unlikely that the Opel Insignia County Estate will reach the U.S., there's certainly a chance.

Other Cars to Consider

Acura TSX -- Like the Regal, the TSX is a front-wheel-drive premium sedan with high-end appointments. While the Regal has the edge on pricing, many buyers prefer the Acura brand.

Audi A4 -- With a starting price of around $34,000, the A4 is solidly competitive with the Regal. The Regal boasts better gas mileage and improved value, but it's hard to argue with Audi's well-known brand name.

Used Cadillac CTS -- The CTS starts around $40,000, placing it well outside the Regal's price range. But used models are easily available for the same price as a new Regal -- and many feature a long list of luxury amenities in addition to Cadillac's exceptional certified pre-owned warranty.

Lexus IS -- Though it's rear- or all-wheel drive compared to the Regal's front-wheel drive, the IS starts around $36,000, so it's priced to compete with high-end versions of the Regal. Expect the extra money to get you slightly better build quality.
