- Nissan Leaf joining Nissan certified pre-owned program
- 7-year limited warranty offered from original in-service date
- Also includes 24-hour emergency roadside assistance and trip interruption coverage
Nissan is adding the fully electric Leaf hatchback to its certified pre-owned program. That's the latest from the automaker, which says the Leaf's certified pre-owned limited warranty will extend coverage of the EV system and powertrain to 7 years or 100,000 miles. That's in addition to the Leaf's new car warranty coverage of 8 years/100,000 miles against battery defects and 5 years/60,000 miles for battery capacity. The CPO limited warranty only covers the powertrain components, not the battery.
Nissan said it made the decision to add the Leaf to the certified pre-owned program because an increasing number of used Leaf models are trickling into dealerships. That makes sense, as the Leaf went on sale in late 2010 -- and many customers leased the plug-in hatchback. Since 3-year leases are common, it's likely that Nissan will see an increase in Leaf models soon.
"As more Nissan LEAF vehicles enter the used car market, we know it's important for Nissan to provide the second owners the same confidence in the car that the original owner enjoyed," explained Erik Gottfried, director of Electric Vehicle Sales and Marketing for Nissan.
Nissan is also offering the Leaf with typical certified pre-owned goodies. That means each one will come with a free CARFAX history report, 24-hour roadside assistance and a 3-month trial subscription to SiriusXM satellite radio. And for a limited time, Nissan is also offering 0.9 percent interest for 36 months on its certified pre-owned vehicles.
So what does a used Nissan Leaf cost to buy? The average asking price of a 2011 model on AutoTrader.com is just under $20,000 -- a big discount over the 2011 model's new-car price tag of more than $35,000. But certified pre-owned models may cost a little more, and shoppers who buy used won't get the federal income tax credit enjoyed by those who get a new Leaf.
What it means to you: Nissan's certified pre-owned warranty gives Leaf shoppers peace of mind for a lesser price than that of a new model.
