• 2014 Corvette automatic returns 16 mpg city/28 mpg hwy
  • Those figures lag the manual Corvette by 1 mpg each
  • 2014 Corvette on sale now; convertible coming later this year

Fuel economy numbers are now official for the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray equipped with an automatic transmission. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says the latest Corvette will return 28 miles per gallon on the highway with its automatic transmission -- just 1 mpg shy of the stick shift version's fuel economy rating.

According to EPA, the automatic Corvette's official fuel economy ratings are 16 mpg city/28 mpg hwy, for combined city and highway driving of 20 mpg. The combined number isn't just an average of city and highway numbers; it's supposed to represent a typical driving cycle for a normal road user.

While the 16 mpg city/28 mpg hwy rating is good, it doesn't quite reach the stick shift Corvette's numbers. The 3-pedal 'Vette, which boasts seven speeds instead of the automatic's six, returns 17 mpg city/29 mpg hwy for 21 mpg combined.

Still, 28 mpg on the highway is an impressive figure, especially considering the Corvette's engine size. The 2-door sports car uses a 6.2-liter V8 that makes a whopping 460 horsepower and 480 lb-ft of torque. That places it in contention with today's most powerful exotic cars, while its fuel economy is closer to that of a midsize sedan.

For shoppers interested in an automatic Corvette, the model is officially on sale now. But don't expect to just walk into your local Chevy dealer and pick one up. Because of high demand, there are long waiting lists for the all-new Corvette.

If you put your name on a waiting list, prepare to pay around $52,000 for a 2014 Corvette Stingray before options. If you want the 28-mpg automatic transmission, that'll be another $1,350. Choosing the 2014 Corvette Convertible, expected to go on sale later this year, will add another $5,000 to the bottom line.

What it means to you: The 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray packs a mean punch -- or an economical one, depending how you drive it.
