• Refreshed exterior styling
  • Various new features for each trim version
  • Newly available safety features

For the new model year, Hyundai is updating its midsize sedan with refreshed styling and newly available features. The 2014 Hyundai Sonata remains available in three trim versions: base GLS, mid-range SE and, at the top of the lineup, Sonata Limited. While some updates apply to the entire lineup, others affect only specific Sonata trim versions.

Across the lineup, the 2014 Sonata receives exterior styling updates that include new grille designs and a new, sportier rear fascia insert. Driver-selectable steering is now standard, which offers comfort, normal and sport modes. Finally, all Sonata versions get new sound-deadening materials that Hyundai says contribute to a quieter cabin.

For 2014, the base Sonata GLS receives no further new standard equipment, but some new options are available. The Popular Equipment package for the GLS now includes a 4.3-inch touchscreen audio system with HD radio and a backup camera. The package also brings an LED dome light and a driver-side blind spot mirror.

For the mid-level Sonata SE, the 4.3-in touchscreen audio system and backup camera and the LED dome light are now standard, along with a full leather-wrapped steering wheel and a body-colored spoiler. The SE also receives an LCD information display in the instrument cluster, carbon fiber interior trim and, for buyers that choose the optional 2.0 Turbo engine, a sport exhaust. Newly available technology and safety features include a blind spot monitoring system and Hyundai's third-generation navigation system with an 8-in touchscreen.

Some of the new standard features on the SE are also now standard on the top-trim Sonata Limited. These include the touchscreen audio system with backup camera, leather steering wheel, LED dome light and LCD information display. Blind spot monitoring is now standard on the Limited, too, as are ventilated front seats. Sonata Limited buyers that opt for the Technology package now get the updated navigation system and HID headlights and LED taillights.

Pricing for the updated 2014 Hyundai Sonata has increased in comparison to the 2013 model, with the GLS now priced at $21,350 and the top-trim Sonata Limited Turbo priced at $28,650. That's an increase of only $155 for the base GLS. But for the Limited Turbo, the price bump is $1,055. Fortunately, Hyundai is offering upgraded equipment to justify the increase.

What it means to you: The latest-generation Hyundai Sonata debuted for the 2011 model year, but updated styling and newly available features keep the 2014 model fresh and competitive among midsize sedans.
