What Are They?

The 2015 Chevrolet Suburban Half-Pipe concept is a SEMA show car outfitted to show the versatile cargo- and people-carrying capabilities of Chevy's long-wheelbase, 3-row SUV. The concept is designed for outdoor adventure, fitted with exterior racks to hold skis and snowboards. Inside, it's built for comfort with leather seats and a rear Blu-ray rear entertainment system.

Chevrolet is also showing two concepts based on the Tahoe SUV. The Tahoe Black concept shows the new 2015 model with a custom look. It has a lowered suspension, an aero body kit, blacked out lighting and trim, tinted glass and big, 22-inch wheels. The Tahoe Police concept, meanwhile, shows the SUV packed with the equipment necessary for law enforcement. This includes emergency lighting, a heavy-duty suspension and a 355-horsepower V8 with a 6-speed automatic transmission.

Will Chevrolet Ever Sell Them?

Except for a police-specific Tahoe, production vehicles equipped like these concepts are unlikely. But buyers will be able to get their hands on the redesigned 2015 Chevrolet Suburban and Tahoe as early as the first part of next year. Aside from new interior and exterior designs, the latest Tahoe and Suburban receive new features such as fold-flat second- and third-row seats and a more efficient direct-injected engine.

Why They're Important

While carlike crossovers have become increasingly popular for carrying families, big truck-based SUVs such as the 2015 Suburban and Tahoe remain irreplaceable for some drivers, especially those who need to tow heavy loads. Rugged, body-on-frame architecture and big V8 engines give the Tahoe and Suburban far more towing capability than, for instance, Chevy's 3-row Traverse crossover. Plus, the Tahoe and Suburban are huge inside, so both SUVs can carry people and cargo with relative ease. Concepts such as the 2015 Chevrolet Suburban Half-Pipe illustrate these capabilities.
