What Is It?

The Mercedes-Benz AMG Vision GT Concept is a 2-door coupe concept car with bold, futuristic styling. Revealed alongside several other new Mercedes models in LA, the Vision Gran Turismo Concept is unique in that it was inspired by a video game.

That's right: Mercedes created the AMG Vision Gran Turismo Concept both to catch eyes in LA and for use in "Gran Turismo 6," an upcoming video game for the PlayStation 3. While the actual concept car doesn't have an engine, the playable version in "Gran Turismo 6" will feature a 577-horsepower twin-turbo V8 that boasts a whopping 590 lb-ft of torque.

But the most unusual thing about the car isn't its monstrous engine or even its video game ties. It's the bold styling, which features an enormous flat hood, a wide track, huge chrome wheels, a teardrop shape in back and no rear window. It's unlike just about anything we've ever seen before -- even in the notoriously crazy world of concept cars.

Will They Ever Sell It?

Absolutely not. And the fact that there's no engine is just one of many reasons we say that. It's hard to imagine this car would pass any sort of safety regulations, and it's too long, low and wide to drive on the street. This one is just for show.

Why It's Important

To some shoppers, the Mercedes lineup represents a more predictable, traditional alternative to the sporty, youth-oriented BMW and Audi brands. Concept cars like the AMG Vision Gran Turismo help change that viewpoint with outrageous styling and the promise of massive power, excellent performance and world-class drivability.

But that isn't the only reason the Mercedes-Benz AMG Vision GT Concept is important. The concept also reminds us that the latest "Gran Turismo" game is just a few weeks from going on sale, marking an unusual tie-in between an automaker and a video game. The thinking is that if you like the car (and it's hard not to be charmed by its absurdity), maybe you'll buy the game, since it's your only real chance to get behind the wheel.
