Following the success of its high-performance SUV, the Cayenne, Porsche has now moved into the sport-utility segment with both feet by adding another SUV to the Porsche lineup: the Macan compact crossover, which is making its debut here in Los Angeles.

Stepping into the spotlight as the first entry-level Porsche SUV, the Macan affirms that the German automaker is looking to draw compact luxury crossover buyers into showrooms, just as Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Audi have done. The 2014 Porsche Macan shares its platform with the Audi Q5 but is built with its own unique suspension.

Here in America, the Macan will offer two twin-turbo V6 engine choices: a 3-liter in the Macan S making 340 horsepower and a 3.6-liter in the Macan Turbo making 400 hp. Europeans will see some additional choices. Most will be fitted with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and all-wheel drive.

The premium interior features a raised center console, similar to the one found in the Porsche Panamera, and a similar console is expected to find its way into the Porsche Boxster.

The 2014 Porsche Macan S will start pricing at around $50,000, and the Macan Turbo will be just over $72,000. Expect sales to start in early 2014.
