• 2015 BMW M3 and M4 officially revealed online
  • New models offer 425 horsepower and 406 lb-ft from twin-turbo 6-cylinder

BMW has officially pulled the cover off its latest high-performance models. The brand recently unveiled the all-new M3 and M4, which are based on the new 3 Series and 4 Series, and boast a wide range of high-performance features and high-tech gadgets.

For many enthusiasts, the most important part of the new M3 and M4 is the exterior styling. To that end, both cars have the look shoppers will want: an aggressive front air dam, wider fenders, sporty-looking rear bumpers and muscular wheels that seems to suggest the M3 and M4 aren't just some run-of-the-mill BMW.

That thought is supported should you look under the hood. There, you'll find a 3.0-liter 6-cylinder engine that's been twin-turbocharged for impressive power. The result is a whopping 425 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque. While the power figure is just 11 horses more than today's M3, the torque number involves a massive jump from the current 295 lb-ft. That means the M3 and M4 will likely boast highly improved acceleration.

Speaking of acceleration, the M3 and M4 are also shedding weight in comparison to last year's M3. Despite being larger than the outgoing M3 Coupe, the M4 boasts a 176-lb weight reduction -- no easy feat as modern cars continue to add technology. The engine alone accounts for some of the weight loss, as BMW says the new twin-turbo powerplant is 22 pounds lighter than the M3's V8.

Given the torque bump and the weight loss, the M3 and M4 should record a screaming 0-to-60 time, and they do. Using the brand's M-DCT dual clutch transmission, the M4 hits 60 miles per hour in just 3.9 seconds. With a traditional 6-speed manual, expect that figure to rise slightly to 4.1 seconds.

Of course, the M3 and M4 also offer a few other upgrades over the M3. One is electric power steering, which offers several modes to help improve low-speed steering feel and provide the driver with the desired steering feedback. There's also a standard limited-slip differential, dubbed Active M, which should help to provide the best possible handling.

We expect to see the M3 and M4 in person at this year's Detroit Auto Show. We also expect to learn more about the cars, including pricing and an exact release date, as they get closer to going on sale next summer.
