• New Volkswagen Passat Sport offers sporty flair
  • Boasts larger wheels, carbon fiber trim, other features
  • Goes on sale early this year with a $27,295 starting price

A new trim level of Volkswagen's popular Passat sedan is bringing a sporty flair to the model's lineup. The new 2014 Volkswagen Passat Sport is adding several new features that give the car a more performance-oriented look and feel.

The Passat Sport's upgrades are instantly noticeable on the outside, as the new model is wearing 19-inch Luxor alloy wheels that will improve handling and give the car a more aggressive look. Other unique exterior features include fog lights, a rear spoiler and black mirror caps for a sleeker look.

Inside, the Passat Sport also features a host of performance-oriented upgrades. The most important is the sedan's new sport comfort seats, which provide extra support under hard cornering. Also unique to the Passat Sport are stainless steel doorsills, carbon fiber trim pieces, sport pedals, special floor mats and -- on automatic models -- paddle shifters mounted on the steering wheel.

Unfortunately for driving enthusiasts, the Passat Sport won't offer a power boost under the hood. Instead, the sedan comes standard with the Passat's mid-level 1.8-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, which makes 170 horsepower and produces 184 lb-ft of torque. Two transmissions are offered: a standard 6-speed manual or an optional 6-speed automatic.

What does it cost? Volkswagen says the Passat Sport will be priced from $27,295 with shipping when it goes on sale early this year. That places it squarely in contention with rivals such as the Honda Accord EX and the Toyota Camry XLE, along with well-equipped versions of the Ford Fusion SE. It also means the Passat Sport will slot just below the high-end Passat SEL Premium in the midsize sedan's lineup, which also consists of S and SE models.

What it means to you: The 2014 Volkswagen Passat Sport brings a sporty look and feel to the popular midsize sedan.
