• BMW 2 Series to start around $33,000
  • Sporty M235i model will start around $44,000
  • 2 Series to replace 1 Series early this year

The all-new 2014 BMW 2 Series will start around $33,000 with shipping when it goes on sale later this year. That's the latest from BMW, which recently released pricing and other details about its latest coupe.

According to BMW, the $33,000 base price is for the base-level 228i, which uses a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder that makes 240 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. That figure is around $600 more expensive than today's 128i coupe, which the 228i will be replacing.

Shoppers who want more power can step up to the muscular M235i, which starts around $44,000 with shipping and offers a 3.0-liter turbocharged 6-cylinder. That engine makes 320 hp and 320 lb-ft, which is a 20-hp bump over today's 135i. The added performance helps justify the M235i's higher base price, as a 2013 135i starts just over $40,000 with shipping.

To put its power to the ground, the 2 Series offers two transmissions. Drivers who want to shift their own gears can select a 6-speed manual, just as they can on today's 1 Series. For those who prefer an automatic, BMW is offering an 8-speed. That's one more gear than the automatic in today's 1 Series, suggesting improved acceleration and better gas mileage.

BMW recently confirmed its 2 Series pricing by launching an online configurator for the coupe, which likely means that the car is close to reaching dealer showrooms. The configurator displays a wide array of color choices, interior options, wheel styles and available features.

The configurator also reveals the 2 Series' standard equipment. Included on all 228i models is launch control, automatic start/stop to save fuel, HD and satellite radio, Bluetooth, a 6.5-inch center-mounted screen and automatic climate control. In addition to its extra power, the M235i adds performance brakes, sport suspension and sporty interior trim.

What it means to you: The 2014 BMW 2 Series is about to reach showrooms, so now is an excellent time to get a good deal on any left-over 1 Series models.
