What Is It?

The Legacy is Subaru's offering in the midsize sedan segment, essentially the brand's rival to the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry. While sales haven't been strong in past years, the 2015 Subaru Legacy is out to change that with new styling, new features and fuel economy improvements.

In terms of styling, the Legacy is all-new inside and out. While the general profile is similar to last year's model, the sedan boasts new wheels, new front and rear ends, bolder headlights and revised taillights with LED bulbs. The model's large wheel arches, shared with the more popular Outback, still remain.

Under the hood, the 2015 Legacy is largely similar to the 2014 model with one big exception: no more manual transmissions. There's a 175-horsepower 4-cylinder and a 256-hp 6-cylinder, both of which are now mated solely to Subaru's CVT automatic. Four-cylinder fuel economy is boosted to 23 miles per gallon city and 30 mpg highway (an increase of 2 and 3 mpg, respectively), while 6-cylinder models jump by the same amount to 20 mpg city and 23 mpg hwy.

If it's technology you're after, the new Legacy has that, too. There's a standard 6.2-inch center-mounted touchscreen for the Legacy's new infotainment system, with an optional 7.0-in touchscreen available when you get navigation. The Legacy also includes a standard rearview camera and boasts Subaru's EyeSight camera system, which helps drivers brake before an impending collision. Other new safety technology includes available rear cross-traffic alert and lane change assist.

How Much?

Subaru hasn't announced pricing, but we wouldn't expect a huge jump over last year's figures. The 2014 Legacy started around $21,000 with shipping, while 6-cylinder models were closer to $29,500 before options.

Add It to Your Shopping List Because?

The 2015 Subaru Legacy gives drivers a unique choice besides common midsize sedan options like the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry. Standard all-wheel drive will benefit drivers in snowy areas, while the Legacy's new styling gives it a leg up on aging rivals. The midsize sedan world is competitive, but the Legacy deserves a spot on your shopping list.

Other Cars to Consider

Ford Fusion -- Like most midsize sedans, the Fusion doesn't offer all-wheel drive. But it boasts a 47-mpg hybrid version, a powerful EcoBoost model and excellent interior room.

Honda Accord -- There's no all-wheel-drive Accord, but you'll find that Honda's popular midsize sedan offers many of the other features that make the Legacy a strong contender, including reliable powertrains, strong fuel economy and excellent build quality.

Toyota Camry -- Once again, the Camry doesn't include an all-wheel-drive option, and that will immediately remove it from some shopping lists. But it does offer 4- or 6-cylinder engines and an available hybrid version that returns great gas mileage without breaking the bank.

Used Ford Taurus -- If you haven't considered the Ford Taurus in a while, you may want to look again. Today's model is larger and more expensive than the Legacy, which is why we've recommended a used version. But the Taurus offers more interior room than the Legacy, more power and available all-wheel drive.
