• Updated Ford Focus shown ahead of Geneva debut
  • 2015 Focus to offer 1.0-liter EcoBoost 3-cylinder in U.S.
  • Also boasts styling tweaks inside and out

An updated 2015 Ford Focus has been revealed ahead of this year's Geneva Auto Show. Ford showed pictures of the latest Focus and announced several details, confirming that there's a new engine coming to the U.S.-bound Focus.

While the 2015 Focus offers updated styling inside and out, the biggest changes are under its hood. That's because the latest Focus will add a new 1.0-liter EcoBoost 3-cylinder, which is the smallest engine ever offered in the compact car. Expected to produce around 120 horsepower and 150 lb-ft of torque, the new engine will likely return 4-cylinder power with 3-cylinder gas mileage -- a huge deal for shoppers interested in improving fuel economy without sacrificing performance. But if you can't drive a stick, don't get too excited: Ford says a 6-speed manual will be the only transmission offered with the 3-cylinder engine.

Beyond its new engine, the Focus also gains styling tweaks, especially to the front. That's where Ford has added its new corporate grille, which uses a style similar to the grille found on the brand's Fusion sedan and C-MAX hybrid hatchback. Other exterior changes include restyled taillights and an updated hood.

Inside, the 2015 Focus also boasts a few changes compared to the current model. There's a new seat trim, for example, along with updated chrome detailing. And last year's climate controls are replaced with new, simpler switchgear. Finally, a redesigned center console offers adjustable cup holders.

Changes to the Focus are aimed at remaining current as the model enters its fourth year in its current guise. Since the Focus debuted for the 2012 model year, it has seen fierce competition in the form of newly redesigned rivals such as the Mazda3, Toyota Corolla, Honda Civic, Kia Forte and Hyundai Elantra. With its new 3-cylinder engine and updated styling, Ford hopes the compact will stay competitive until the model is ready for a full redesign.

Stay tuned for more information about the 2015 Ford Focus, as we'll learn more when the car launches at this year's Geneva Auto Show.

What it means to you: If you're interested in a compact car, get excited about the Focus model's upcoming 1.0-liter 3-cylinder, which doesn't make any compromises for excellent fuel economy.
