• Forget the Muppets; it's the automakers' turn to take Manhattan
  • In a rich man's city, luxury takes a front seat
  • World Car of the Year winner to be announced

The 2014 New York Auto Show is looking to end the car-show season on a high note worthy of a Broadway musical. There's plenty of dramatic metal making either a world debut or North American debut. This is the last opportunity for manufacturers to display their good stuff before Paris -- which isn't until October -- when the whole formula of lights, wraps and techno music gets rinsed and repeated. In the meantime, these cars should put the "go" into Gotham.

Premium Rush

The 2015 Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG 4Matic Coupe is a heck of a long name but also a heck of a car. Based on the current and relatively recent S-Class sedan, a technological tour de force in and of itself, the all-wheel-drive S63 Coupe ditches a couple of doors, turns up the twin turbos and unleashes 577 horsepower onto the unsuspecting streets.

BMW is making a big impact in the Big Apple. In one area of the company's stand is the 2015 BMW X4 crossover. You know how the X6 is like the X5 crossover SUV, only with more of a fastback roof? Well, that's the X4's relationship to the X3.

Look over to another part of the stand to find the 4 Series Gran Coupe. Yes, the 4 range is supposed to accommodate 2-door versions that were once part of the 3 Series lineup, but the roof at least has a coupelike slant, and the rear cargo area is accessed by a handy tailgate.

There are excited whispers that the 425-hp 2015 BMW M4 Convertible will be unveiled. The M4 replaces 2-door versions of the high-performance M3, and this variant has a folding hardtop.

On a humbler but still premium note, the 2015 Acura TLX replaces the TSX and TL midsize sedans. That said, some of the hardware is not so humble: V6 versions get a 9-speed automatic transmission, which is about the highest number of ratios that can be squeezed in.

Central Perks

It's a brand-new generation for the 2015 Hyundai Sonata midsize sedan. Already a popular choice in regular or hybrid form, the new Sonata will no doubt build on this success.

The 2015 Nissan Murano heralds a new (third) generation of this midsize crossover SUV with a radical redesign.

No matter how useful people-movers can be, they tend to lose out to SUV models when the Great American family-car-buyer heads into a dealership. Perhaps the all-new 2015 Kia Sedona could change a few minds with its sliding doors and ingenious places to put cups, Cheerios and all the other detritus that comes with having kids.

Also expected is the 2015 Subaru Outback, the crossover/wagon based on the Legacy midsize sedan. Since there's a new generation of Legacy models packing in greater levels of refinement, a new Outback should similarly retain its status as one of the company's most popular models.

Gongs of New York

The 2014 World Car of the Year awards are always dished out at this show. The finalists this year are the 2014 Audi A3, 2014 BMW 4 Series and 2014 Mazda3.

Mazda already has cause to celebrate. It's marking 25 years of the MX-5 Miata, everyone's favorite affordable 2-seater. The 2014 Mazda MX-5 isn't breaking any new ground, but there's a chance we might see something that points to a fresh generation.

The above vehicles are just those that we know about now. Don't be surprised if there are more headline-grabbers. The 2014 New York Auto Show has press days on April 16 and 17, and AutoTrader.com will be reporting all the highlights. The show then opens to the public from April 18-27.

What it means to you: The New York Auto Show has seen many iconic cars launched in its halls. Perhaps this year will host another.
