What Is It?

The Lincoln MKX Concept is a concept SUV that previews the direction Ford's luxury brand Lincoln will take with its next MKX crossover. Offering bold new styling full of futuristic touches, the MKX Concept certainly stands out from the luxury-SUV crowd.

On the outside, the MKX Concept offers an unusual look that's highly distinct from today's model. While it keeps the unusual Lincoln waterfall grille, the MKX Concept adds large alloy wheels, sweeping lines down each side, tiny side mirrors with uniquely shaped integrated turn signals and narrow LED headlights that give the crossover an especially bold face.

Although Lincoln has not yet shown off the MKX Concept's interior, we have high hopes. Today's MKX is based on the Ford Edge, which debuted for the 2007 model year. While Lincoln has done an excellent job keeping the MKX current in spite of the SUV's age, we expect that the new MKX will boast more upscale materials in keeping with class leaders such as the BMW X5 and Lexus RX.

Will They Ever Sell It?

There's no question that a redesigned Lincoln MKX is on its way, but we don't think it will look exactly like this. The Lincoln MKX Concept is, after all, just a concept. While the production version will incorporate several major design cues, it won't use them all.

Why It's Important

Lincoln is attempting to reinvent itself as a high-end luxury brand, capable of competing with the likes of Lexus, BMW and Mercedes. An all-new MKX will go a long way toward establishing Lincoln as a player in the luxury-vehicle world, given the strong popularity of the midsize-luxury-crossover segment and rivals such as the Acura MDX, Lexus RX and BMW X5.

We've already seen the Ford Edge Concept, which was released last year at the Los Angeles Auto Show, and we were impressed with its appearance, both inside and out. Given that the MKX will be based on the Edge, we see bright futures for both models if Ford and Lincoln can keep production models fairly similar to the designs shown in concept form.
