• IIHS awards Top Safety Pick+ rating to latest Hyundai Genesis
  • New Genesis boasts new styling, new interior and new features
  • All-new Genesis goes on sale later this spring

The all-new 2015 Hyundai Genesis has been awarded the highest possible safety rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). That's the latest from the nonprofit IIHS, which recently confirmed that the newly redesigned luxury sedan earned the agency's Top Safety Pick+ rating.

According to IIHS, the 2015 Genesis received its excellent rating after a strong showing in all five of the group's crash tests. The sedan earned Good scores -- IIHS's highest possible mark -- in each test, including the difficult small-overlap front test. That test, which involves a car hitting an object that simulates a pole or a tree on the driver's side, has caused problems for a long list of new models -- so many that the Genesis is the first rear-wheel-drive luxury sedan that has earned a Good rating in the test.

In addition to its Good rating in the small-overlap front test, the 2015 Genesis also scored Good ratings in IIHS's moderate-overlap front test, its side-impact test, its roof-strength test and its head-restraints test. While that's enough to earn a Top Safety Pick rating, the Genesis adds the + on the end thanks to available front crash-prevention techniques that can help to stop the car in case of an impending accident.

"The Top Safety Pick+ designation recognizes state-of-the-art safety," said IIHS President Adrian Lund. "The new Genesis is not only engineered to protect people when crashes happen, but with its optional automatic emergency braking system rated superior in our tests, this car can help drivers avoid some of the most common kinds of collisions altogether."

Revealed earlier this year at the New York Auto Show, the 2015 Genesis marks the beginning of the model's second generation. The first-generation Genesis, which came out for the 2009 model year, served as Hyundai's flagship until the larger Equus debuted for 2011. The new Genesis boasts two engines -- a 311-horsepower 3.8-liter V6, and a 420-hp 5.0-liter V8 -- and a long list of new safety and convenience features. Hyundai says that the 2015 Genesis will go on sale later this spring.

What it means to you: The 2015 Hyundai Genesis offers new equipment, a new interior and a new look, and now it boasts excellent crash-test scores to go along with the major update.
