• Kia cutting Forte prices for 2015 model year by $10 to $16,690
  • New price lets Kia claim the title of least expensive compact car
  • 2015 Forte will arrive at dealerships soon, unchanged except for pricing

The 2015 Kia Forte isn't increasing its price for the latest model year: It's actually cutting it -- by $10. While that figure may seem small, Kia says it allows the Forte to stake its claim as the least expensive compact car available, bucking the usual trend of raising prices for a new model year.

According to Kia, the 2015 Forte will start at $16,690 with shipping, which makes it just $10 less expensive than last year's Forte. It also makes the Forte less expensive than the Nissan Sentra, which is currently the least expensive compact sedan on the market. That means the Forte can now claim to be the least expensive option in its segment, which is important for shoppers buying a small car on a budget.

Interestingly, Kia's goal of having the least expensive compact car on the market comes at a time when the brand is also adding a high-dollar luxury sedan to its lineup. The V8-powered 2015 Kia K900 recently made its debut, offering a starting price of just over $60,000 with shipping.

Still, the Forte's low base price gives shoppers yet another reason to consider the compact Kia. Newly redesigned for the 2014 model year, the latest Forte offers a long list of standard and optional features, as well as three different body styles: a sedan, a 2-door coupe (the Forte Koup) and a 5-door hatchback. The Forte also boasts three engine choices: a 148-horsepower 1.6-liter 4-cylinder, a 173-hp 2.0-liter 4-cylinder and an especially sporty 201-hp turbocharged 1.6-liter 4-cylinder in the car's performance-oriented SX models.

According to Kia, the 2015 Forte is on its way to dealerships now. Aside from its price reduction, the Forte is unchanged for the latest model year.

What it means to you: The 2015 Kia Forte is currently the least expensive compact sedan on the market, even if it's only by a few dollars.
