Nissan has issued an official voluntary recall for 2012 Altima models and 2012 NV van models. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the recall only affects 54 models: Altima models built between June 15 through June 21, 2011 and NV vans built between June 23 and June 28, 2011.

Both the Altima and NV van are being recalled for an airbag-related issue. The airbag control unit (ACU) was improperly installed on both models during the specified time frame. This faulty installation could ultimately result in the airbag's failure to deploy in the event of a crash.

This is the third recall for the Nissan Altima since 2007; fortunately for Nissan this recall is much smaller than the first. This is the second time the 2012 Altima has been recalled in a month. In early August 2011, Nissan recalled 20,000 Altima models, affecting 2011 and 2012 models. The first recall was for a suspension bolt that wasn't properly torqued. The bolt could potentially become loose, creating a vibration. If left unrepaired, the bolt could potentially loosen further, causing more serious damage to the vehicle.

In 2007, the automaker had to recall over 650,000 Altima and Sentra models built between 2002 and 2005. The vehicles featured a crankshaft sensor that could malfunction and suddenly cause the vehicle's engine to stop unexpectedly.

The Nissan NV is the first full size work van sold by the Japanese automaker in the United States. Starting at just $24,950, the NV is the newest competitor in the commercial van market. The van is comparable to such adversaries like the Chevrolet Express Cargo, GMC Savana Cargo, and Ford's E-Series van.

Nissan says it will perform the ACU repairs free of charge to owners of affected models. Owners should contact Nissan as soon as possible to determine if they own a recalled model.
