Subaru has initiated two recall campaigns that together may affect over 490,000 vehicles. A recall of 2010 and 2011 Legacy and Outback models addresses components in the wiper motor that may overheat, and could include 190,080 vehicles. Subaru will also recall as many as 295,123 Forester, Impreza and Saab 9-2x models due to possible corrosion of suspension parts.

The broader recall for corrosion issues affects 2003-2008 Forester, 2002-2007 Impreza, and 2005-2006 Saab 9-2x models originally sold or currently registered in 20 US states and the District of Columbia. At no charge, dealers will inspect and either rustproof or replace the front lower control arm, which is susceptible to corrosion when exposed to salty or humid conditions.

The recall specifically cites snow melting agents as a possible culprit. The geographic area included in the recall spans the northeastern and mid-western US, where extreme winter weather (and consequently, all-wheel drive Subarus) are common.

Subaru built the 9-2x for Saab, which introduced the vehicle as a 2005 model. Just a year later, Saab then-owner General Motors ended its relationship with Subaru. The 2006 9-2x was the final model year.

Subaru's other recent recall on Legacy and Outback models addresses possible overheating in the front wiper motor. Overheating presents a fire risk, or could cause the windshield wipers to become inoperable, resulting in poor visibility. Subaru will inspect and replace the bottom cover assembly of the windshield wiper motor free of charge.

Both recalls are expected to begin in November with Subaru notifying owners. More information is available by searching for the Legacy/Outback recall using campaign ID 11V469000, or for the Forester/Impreza/Saab 9-2x recall using campaign ID 11V464000.
